Why?! Because it's with Mingus and Roach? Because it's mythological, and supposed to be that good? It doesn't work that way, even if Duke plays amazing on it as usual (on Caravan, note that Roach messed up the rhythm in the return to the closing A of the exposition - turning 4 into 1, it's a completely different rhythmic feel and it's definitely not on purpose).

my favorite duke recordings are with his orchestra between 1935 - 46 (John Hardy's Wife, Rockabye River, Charlie The Chulo, Main Stem, Just A-Settin And a Rockin'... to name a few).

He was definitely at one of several highs around then, but I have a soft spot for his stuff with smaller bands.

Yeahm I did notice that, but I had erased it from my mind. CD players and skip function, you see. But the interplay between the musicians is what amazes me. The aforementioned rythm section's performance on Flurette Africanne is just to beautiful to pass up.
