Memorial Day - World War I
Uploader: Friendo1231Video Description: This video follows the main battling sectors of the Great War (the supposed "War to End All Wars"; unfortunately not the case). The sectors are: Alsace, Flanders, the Marne, and Verdun.
This video is dedicated to the veterans of World War I, no matter what side they fought for. In total, 41 million casualties would be sustained. This number breaks down to 20.7 million dead, and 20.3 million wounded. Countless machines would be destroyed, including airplanes, tanks, zeppelins, balloons, ships, submarines, and artillery emplacements.
Today, there are only 9 verified World War I veterans alive. They are:
-Stanley Choules, Britain, 107
-Sydney Lucas, Britain, 107
-John Ross, Australia, 109
-Gladys Powers, Britain, 109
-Henry Allingham, Britain, 111 (oldest)
-Henry Patch, Britain, 109
-William Stone, Britain, 107
-John Babcock, Canada, 107
-Frank Buckles, United States, 107
In this year, 2008, a total of 10 World War I veterans have died. They are:
-Raymond Cambefort, France, 107 (d. January 16th)
-Louis de Cazenave, France, 110 (d. January 20th)
-Lazare Ponticelli, France/Italy, 110 (d. March 12th)
-Erich Kästner, Germany, 107 (last German vet; d. January 1st)
-Yakup Satar, Ottoman Empire, 110 (last Ottoman vet; d. April 2nd)
-Stanisław Wycech, Poland, 105 (last Polish vet; d. January 12th)
-Harry Landis, United States, 108 (d. February 4th)
-Franz Künstler, Austro-Hungary, 107 (last Austro-Hungarian vet and the last Central Powers vet in general; d. May 27th)
-Francesco Chiarello, Italy, 109 (d. June 27)
-Delfino Borroni, Italy, 110 (last Italian veteran; d. October 26)
-Fernand Goux, France, 108 (d. November 9)
This November 11th, the war ended 90 years ago.
Only one major event on May 26th occurred during World War I: Turkey begins large-scale deportations of Armenians inside their country.

**UPDATE**
*May 27, 2008*
I have unfortunate news. It seems that Franz Künstler has died here in Germany. That sadly means that veterans of the Central Powers are now nonexistent. We have only Entente soldiers to look to. Google it; can't post the link since it's too long. Just found out about it this morning.
Salute, kamerad. Rest easy.
**UPDATE**
July 7, 2008
It has come to my attention that Mr. Ponticelli, who fought for France AND Italy was not the last French veteran. Fernand Goux came forward and said that he was indeed a veteran of World War I. Henceforth, he has been added to the list.
Unfortunately, Franceso Chiarello, an Italian veteran, died just a few days ago. He has been removed from the list of the living and added to the list of the dead.
**UPDATE**
August 21, 2008
It has come to my attention that another French citizen has come foward as a WWI vet: Pierre Picault. Mr. Picault's claim is currently being validated, but it seems quite likely that he is indeed what he says.
**UPDATE**
October 28, 2008
Delfino Borroni has passed away.
**UPDATE**
November 18, 2008
Mr. Goux passed away on November 9th. Until today, thanks to DeJongeStudio, I had heard nothing of this. We have lost many veterans this year. Next year... they may all be gone...
