I don't know that I'd say this is being engineered. But that may be a matter of semantics. The politicians do little about this, because the system has become so rife with bribery from special interests that the politicians in both parties set up the system to enrich their friends and those that helped them out and are connected. As the debt load increases, this will become more desperate as those who own the politicians try to inoculate or protect themselves from looming economic collapse.

I thought the Savings and Loan debacle might do it. The mortgages going bad and the the gov't having to pick up the tab for Bear-Sterns or Indy Bank? Nope so could the US Gov't be so big that it can not bankrupt? Not sure now, maybe we can spend all we want and should have national health care, maybe there is no way to break the US and it is impossible for us to go bankrupt?

The problem is not the people, it is the inflated dollar not backed by gold. Called fiat money. Our dollar is almost worthless. Medicare and SS are only part of the problem (actually SS wouldn't be a problem if Congress, helped by 4 Whitehouses, hadn't spent 20 years of SS surpluses).
We're also spending far too much trying to garrison the globe. Add in military spending that's not part of the official defense budget and we're spending ~$1.2 trillion/yr. Our defense needs to be for defense only, not trying to maintain an empire, which is what we've been doing. The founding fathers would be appalled.

Have fun watching all of the luxuries americans take for granted dissipate. Don't bother sitting on your money waiting for the problems to boil over either, it's just going to become less and less valuable. Might wanna stock up on gas before it goes up to 8 bucks a gallon. :p
