Are you SURE this was arranged by Lyle Mays ?? The 'way' he is playing and the arrangement itself does not sound like would have been written by him ??

This definitely is ... ( 4 months ago by monsterjazzlicks)
This definitely is by far the best arrangement i have ever heard. Esp because the TEMPO is high (even more so than Chick's !!) and the harmony/voicings compliment both the composer and the spirit of the piece.
But, i do really wish it was longer (ie. the 'solo sections' opened up).

YES!!! There IS a bassoon at 2:29...look in front of the bass player. You can see the top of it sticking up across the bass player's body.
Lyle was writing ... ( 4 months ago by pickupdropov)
Lyle was writing big band arrangements as a teen and this sounds very much like his arrangements when he was a student at Eau Claire WI under Dom Spera. He was also listening to Chick Corea at the same time when Tones for Jones Bones and Inner Space were being released.
You may still be right - I need to do some more digging. Thanks much for keeping the conversation alive.

This was arranged ... ( 4 months ago by ntsualum)
This was arranged by Tony Klatka (trumpet) and released in 1973 on the award winning "Giant Steps' album. Lyle Mays was a prodigy before he ever set foot on the NTSU campus but he didn't arrange this one.
Thanks (ntsualum) ... ( 4 months ago by monsterjazzlicks)
Thanks (ntsualum) for clearing that one up !! i knew/felt it was not a piano-players arrangement. Personally, i would have guessed it was written by a trombonist.
i was not aware of the 'Giant Steps' album either.

What a lousy video! ... ( 4 months ago by karlhelge2005)
What a lousy video! But what great music! What this man, Woody, did for jazz, but not only for jazz, is unbeleavable. From the 40th until his death he gave generations of young musicians a platform to perform, to create new music and to start a big career.
Never forget: he was the leader, but his love was music and his musicians!
Great men, always to be remembered.

Is the same version as on the cd "Giant Steps"?? Or are they totally different recordings (and maybe even bands) ??

Thanks guys! I appreciate the 'respect', even 30 years later! Let me add that the trpt section here is one of the best ever! I was very lucky, as a 'rookie', to have these guys to keep me grounded.
