Hubbard never came into direct contact with Crowley, but definitely was aware of him and his work. Honestly though, i don't think Hubbard was that well studied in esotericism but was instead obsessed with ideas of power and control over others. These kinds of things, to the uninitiated, is what 'magick' is about...
He was certainly influenced by Crowley though, very much so.
He sought to attain the highest levels of power, intending to use them to control others for his own ego - which by their very definition meant that he would never be able to achieve them.
I thought Hubbard and Crowley met through Jack Parsons. In fact Hubbard claimed Crowley was his friend. Though maybe that was through Hubbard's diluted mind and had nothing to do with Crowley at all.
i'd be happy to be shown evidence to the contrary, but as far as i know Crowley only knew about Hubbard through people like Parsons and others involved in the Agape Lodge.
Crowley thought he was a con-man, and thought the whole Babalon Working thing they had going over at Agape lodge was idiotic and ridiculous.
None-the-less, this is Epic Win for Anonymous. We never forgive, we never forget.

But it didn't start out as a religion. It started out as a psychotherapy business...the religion angle came later. 'nuff said.
