I disagree DeNiro in Goodfellas is still a fairly restrained character. Sure he has a vicious streak but he isnt as arrogant and loud mouthed as Pesci who character wise has more in common with Sonny. Physical looks are important in The Godfather when it comes to casting since Puzos novel frequently refers to Sonnys size and build. Sure DeNiro has the acting ability to fit any role but in my opinion after reading the novel I wouldn't ask for anyone other than Caan.

As far as Goodfellas vs Godfather The Godfather is in a league of its own. Only Sergio Leones Once upon a time in america can come close as far as epic gangster films go. Goodfellas is a great film but it lacks the emotional/character depth of the Godfather and OUATIA.Goodfellas is much more stylized and racy, initially more entertaining I guess but overall it doesn't quite match the greatness of Godfather and OUATIA which are BIG epic stories. Of course this is just my opinion though!

But he sure is arrogant and loud mouth in this clip. Even more so than Cann. And did you get to read the book before watching the movie? Of course if you've watched the movie a zillion times, it's hard to picture anybody but Cann in the role. But ask any New Yorker, anybody familiar with real wiseguys, and they will tell you that DeNiro would've been more realistic.

Picture DeNiro as you see him here, as Micheal and Fredo's hot-tempered older brother. As he says here, "its Sonny, really like, killer. But nothing we can really sell." Which meant it was too raw for average people. Soft people like you who thinks TGF is a better gangster film than Goodfellas. Sheesh.
