The thing in his ear is wut muscians use if they got money. its to hear them self in there own ear more clearer like listening to music its to help them stay in tune/time with each other half the time its in only one ear but sum do use in both to block out every sound other then them

he's still THE singer for the who, bryan adams was just a guest. The earpiece is so he can hear himself singing, it's more efficient than the monitor speakers (the ones at the front of the stage, pointed back at the band), take a look at some of the newer groups like boyzone or take that and you'll see all of them using the same type of thing, some even use two of them.
