i thought the M14 ran the 7.62 x 39mm. the 7.62 X 51 (usually goes by 7.62 x 51R) is a full out rifle round used for hunting. not that the 39mm can't be used for that.

US Navy has a tendancy to use M14 over M16 in 80s, 90s when I was in. Maybe still. Anyone know why? Different threat/feild conditions? Conservatism?

The m14 has a larger round, goes further and more accurately. the m16 has low power, and low accuracy past 600 yards.

DKm442... The m14 did NOT use the 7.62x39 round, that's an assault rifle intermediate round were as the m14 is a full caliber battle rifle. The 7.62x51 is not know as the 51R, it's know as the x51 NATO. The bullet i beleive you mistaking it with is the 7.62x54R russian round, used in the Dragunov. The x51 is generaly considered too large for most game, buth the 39 is the perfect size.

did you say the 7.62x51 is too large for most game? what are you hunting? squirrels? the .308 is a very common hunting round but is not as common as the .30-06. you must not hunt anything bigger than rabbit.

also... to make sure EVERYONE understands, i don't know all that much about the multitude of different pistol, sub-machine gun (same difference), assault rifle, and regular rifle rounds. just the basics 9mm, .45, 5.56, 7.62 x 39, .50, 25mm, 30mm, 40mm, 105mm, 120mm. PLEASE don't get it twisted!

You are wrong, the 7.62x39mm round is used for the Kalashnikow AK-47.
The hunting round is called .308 Winchester and its NATO designation is 7.62x51mm, just as the .223 Remington (civil) and 5.56x45mm NATO.

I agree. If you see a group of enemies at that range you are wasting your time if you want to pick them off by using auto. Keep their heads down and blast away with a SAW.

I am not illiterate! But English is not my native language, sometimes it is realy hard to understand what people are trying to say!
I just wanted to make clear that the M14 uses the 7.61x51mm NATO nothing more. The 7.62x51R = .30-30 Winchester is a hunting round.

This is not sarcastic so don't get mad, I really want to know from your perspective as an active duty military person what makes one better than the other. Is it power, reliability or both? I own 4 AR platform rifles and use them for predators. They do not nor will they ever see sustained assault rifle type applications. I maintain them and my record is 9 coyotes in one day with my Armalite 20" Bull Barrel topped with Leupold 3-9. I have never been in the military. My AR's are very accurate.

Anyone who thinks the M-16 is even half the rifle the M-14 is an idiot.
M-14 range is up to 1000 yards.
M-16 range is up to 550 yards.
People have been hit with 4 and 5 5.56 rounds and still fought back. When hit with a 7.62 round you go down.
Body armour can stop a 5.56 round, but a 7.62 round goes right through.

...but then again, people have died from .38 pistol rounds and some have survived hand-grenades, mortar rounds, 155mm artillery shrapnel! "Better" is based on need.
You don't have to like the M16, but as a general use assault rifle it WAS an improvement. The M14 remains better at single-shot sniping, it is a GREAT weapon. Maybe the problem is like comparing a sedan to a truck, and then down-grading the sedan because it can't carry as much?
