Special Effect Techniques for the Native American Flute

Uploader: KarnDraco
Video Description: This is my second tutorial video here on YouTube for the curious Native American flute player. This video focuses on some fingering and tonguing techniques that may allow you to add some interest and authentic character to your playing. Discussed here are things such as double-tonguing, trilling, "popping," and others. The flutes used in this video are, in order, a western red cedar F# flute (my very first flute!) made by Spring Shine of Cedar Spirit Flutes, and a redwood D drone and redwood E bass flute by Geoffrey Ellis of Earth Tone Flutes. Oh, and yes, that is an original 1990 TMNT movie poster on the wall behind me. :)

No, but imagine you teaching a workshop, someone writes down that word in their notes, and then when they come home they look it up because they forget what it was about.
Anyway. Not very important.

I have been playing native flute for about 2
years now and have always been told to try and
play what I feel, what comes from the soul and
not try to copy everyone else. But I have got to say, you are the best native american flute
player on Youtube. Your style is very smooth
and your melodies are great. So please continue the techniques videos. I would love
to learn more from you.

What kind of flute ... ( 1 month ago by misharyutubbee)
What kind of flute do you recommend to a beginner? Some say "A minor." I'm seriously thinking of buying a flute soon.
A mid-range flute ... ( 1 month ago by KarnDraco)
A mid-range flute with an easy-to-reach spread of finger holes is usually the best for starting out. This could be anything from mid-F up to B, though it also depends on how the flute is made. Different makers create their flutes in different ways, so there's a great deal of variation. Check out different makers' websites, feel free to ask them questions, and make sure you know exactly what you want before committing to buy. Good luck! :)
I played trumpet ... ( 1 month ago by KarnDraco)
I played trumpet for years in school, which is where I first developed a lot of my playing skills, double-tonguing included. Many of those skills translated well to the Native American flute!
