I agree with you that 5 police officers could likely move anyone. However, had that been the case, I suspect that the reaction may have been, "Why do several police officers need to move one nerdy kid. It is excessive force." I suspect that his screaming would have made it appear that he was being hurt.
Besides, from an officer's perspective, there is the prospect of administrative reviews, weapon attacks, lawsuits, etc. There is no incentive to lay hands on him if you don't have to.

also, Tazers only temporary shock you. They don't weaken you afterwards. I been Tazed. It hurts like hell while it is happening, but afterwards there is no weakness. Only the sensation that Tazing hurts and it would be great not to have it happen again. Tazing is a form of pain compliance to get someone to stop doing what their doing.
The alternative is impact weapons, or joint manipulation. Both of which people have protested in the past due to the possibility of injuring.

This is outrageous! Again, blatant disrespect for your fellow man.
Taser guns should be outlawed. I'll say it again: Taser guns should be outlawed. They are almost equal in nature to guns.
You can stop someone by shooting them in the leg, too. But is proper to do this to someone leaving the study hall/library/computer lab? There are other methods involved including treating the person with RESPECT. This is soo, soo wrong.
Get rid of the weapons and come down to earth! Be civil!!

One-on-one. TALK TO HIM. SHOW RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING. You yourself know how hard it is to get off the computer.
If you need to, shut off the lights to the lab or close down the computer and say that it is time to close the library.
I am sure he would have left without incident.

Great comment previously made and good advice to follow: Regardless of what the individual said or done, electrocuting someone who is on the floor and not posing a threat to the safety of the officers and threatening to electrocute other innocent individuals is totally unjustified and an abuse of power. Tasers should be used as a last resort.

Are you assuming that someone didn't ask this guy to leave one-on-one prior to what we see on the video? I'm assuming that he was asked prior to library staff calling the police. If anyone knows for sure, I'd be interested in knowing.
I would take issue with likening a Tazer to a Firearm. They were both developed for different reasons and are used in very different ways.

you can tell by the way he was yelling that he was out of control. It is perfectly justified to assume that he could get physical. Also, since the TASER is not a lethal weapon, it can be legally deployed in an incident where no one's life is particularly in danger. There are some people who cannot be verbally disuaded. the police have to remove him, and unfortunately this student chose the hard way.
