all robot are remote controlled... even in industry. it still need man to give sequence commands (list of commands) to do a job...
in this battle, each robot is given some command to do some special attack.
basically, it has no brain and still need human to make decision.
got that.. that's the robot mean.. don't mix it up with the movie mambo jumbo kind of robot..

that's the different goal in making robot betwen west and east.
in japan, they are obsessive to create a humanoid human controlled robot, while in the west searching for fully automatic inteligent robot.
that's why they don't contest a fully automatic robot. fully automatic robots are only shown in expo and a kind.
in japan, most amateur robot maker deeply influence by anime culture (mecha anime). it's all about dreams and imagination.

by the way... even in the most automatic robot, it still need human to program and combine commands.. so all robot just doing the pre-programed command. to make the robot to do another sequence, programmer has to stop the robot and input another command..
that's mean there are no fully automatic robot, unless of course scientist already create an A.I.

I'm not sure what you mean by sequence, but there are definitely autonomous robots. Maybe not those japanese humanoids, but they're definitely out there. I actually have created 2 autonomous robots. One for FRC, and one that is an arm, as a project.

sequence are a list of commands for the robot to do...
for example, u created a robot to do walking, u must give a list of command to do that (i think u know this)..
maybe u have created autonomous robots, but i believe it's still for a simple routines. the robot can't make a real problem solving decisions. all decisions it make are pre-progammed (if-then-else). for humanoid robot need more complex commands..

Believe me , the pace of technology especially in the Artificial intelligence field is going at insane speeds , I know because i am an AI scientist. Our Robots mental skills today are far more advanced than they were in year 2000 or 2003 .

itis just change the control from human to rat.. not an AI...
the robot still has to programmed to translate impulses commands from the rat (neurons using electrical impulse to send commands)...
for example:
if the robot programmed to run, jump, turn. it can't do flip even if the rat wants it..
and the rat decided what action and when it must be used..
the robot still can't make complex decision for itself...

i believe the AI technology today far more advance than couple years ago...
but i also believe it far from a real AI..
to create a machine with a human brain capabilities...
the different between human and machine is a capability to learn and use the knowledge to create an action by himself or herself and judge when to use it. In other word: Self programing capability.
But i hope scientists never create such machine. i don't like the idea that machine without human control.

it's because so many people said those Japanese robot contests are not robot at all. said it's just RC contests..
they're forget those people are amateurs (just as i am).
they don't know how hard to program a robot to do a task perfectly.
that the same robot frame can have different result when programmed by different people.
maybe someday those people can create fullsize bipedal combat robot.
just like when airplane created..
