High Voltage Cable Inspection

Video Description: High Voltage Cable Inspection on 0.5MV lines. Thanks for all the comments! This is what I used to do a couple of years back, and that also it is shot so nicely, that I thought it befitting to show all.
Clip is from IMAX documentary called "Straight Up", and grabbed from HD source.

Well, aside from being somewhat dangerous to use a helicopter with a semi-rigid system for power line patrol (not that it's not done) the Hughes 500 has about half the operating costs of a jet ranger, and quite simply it costs more.

Utility companies pay around $1100/hr for type of work so they have to decide if it's completely necessary.

That's freakin' awesome! Just don't rain on his parade by pointing out that we don't really need the wires. Nikola Tesla found a method of transmitting power and data wirelessly across the globe in the early 1900's - but J.P. Morgan pulled his 51% of the funding when he realized he couldn't meter the power, and therefore couldn't charge anyone for it (greedy bastard).

I like the view at 2:17, you see a second "spider" crawler. These guys are amazing. I am sure, like firefighters, they just say it is their job. However, what they do (both of them) takes balls of STEEL. Amazing.
They are so mechanical and precise.

All transmission lines carry AC. DC is rarely used, and when it is it is usually HVDC submarine cables. The AC is the actual source of the crackling you hear as the current is reversed every 1/60th of a second.
