Surprising sequence of rolls (backgammon)

Uploader: maareyes
Video Description: A common phrase while playing backgammon is "You gotta be ***** kidding me". Here is a true example of one of those moments. When white exits the bar with 6-5, winning chance for opponent is well over 99% but the dice gods intervene with an amazing sequence of consecutive doubles. This was a game played on www.fibs.com using 3DFiBs Backgammon free software. Visit the home page of 3DFiBs to download and play. Backgammon is a wonderful game and easy to learn for beginners. Way more fun than chess or checkers!!
Backgammon is not a simple game of chance. Even though dice are involved and there is a random element where luck can be a factor, there is lots of room for learning and improvement. Two important lessons you will learn when you study backgammon is (1) Never give up where there is still a chance. (2) It's not about winning or losing, it's about doing the best you can with what you got.

This is what makes backgammon such a fascinating game. Even though the dice are random, sometimes they take on a personality as if they know what the position entails. It is a perfectly designed game.

No, it was a real game played on FIBS. Recorded the play back on the desktop. I was a click away from resigning (99%+ after the 6-5 roll) I got a good laugh on that final 4-4 roll. Unfortunately my opponent was a bot so I didnt get the full benefit of Schadenfreude but it was still fun.

I paly backgammon online as well and I do not think the randomness of the rolls is that random if you understand what I mean. Over 10 doubles during a game are not very rare and I experienced that on several servers.

at 56 seconds black played totally wrong should have eaten two rather than playing the two dice and at 25 seconds 2:2 could have been played better thus, winning black the game

It is possible that taking 2 off with the 22 roll at 0:25 could have won the game but I think it would be the wrong play. Usually best to keep the board closed and bear off from the rear. At 0:56 there is an odd number of checkers left (9) so taking 1 off or 2 off still leaves 4 rolls to bear off the rest. Most human players will take 2 off but the computer program only checks winning chances and if they are both the same, picks whichever move is handy.

The thing I hate about online backgammon is people complaining about how the dice are not random blah blah. Learn math. Random does not mean each roll comes around every 36 or anything close to that. The chances of 4 doubles is about 1/1300 you'll see it every few games. This scenario the hero had about 1/12000 chance of winning by rolling 2 high doubles and then double not aces, and another double, and the opponent rolling no doubles.
So even though the ... ( 1 year ago by ADzim4)
So even though the chances of this whole sequence of events was low, the point is the dice don't remember what they rolled last time, so on the last roll he needed doubles to win and had the same 1/6 chance as any other roll to be doubles.

I agree with you, "it's not about winning or losing, it's about doing the best you can with what you got." I have had a lot of fun by playing this way with my wife. And hell, f*ck math, here it's just opportunity to laugh. (sorry my bad english)
The dice numbers ... ( 10 months ago by kalfakak)
The dice numbers that the computer choses or itself has nothing to do with math, although - in general - it is true that it can happen to have specific results when exactly you need them.
In the case of 3dfibs, the program choses, in each case, its favorite roll numbers and uses them. This is not backgammon, it is grand cheating. Imagine they use this program in games where real money is at stake.

An expert backgammon player always appears to be "very lucky". This is not cheating. It is a result of making the best checker play for each dice roll.

LOL I'm regular player on Fibs ( rated approx. 1870 at this time ) and I can tell you that , despite some 'unreal dice throws' once in a while, there's no cheating from the FIBS server : sometimes you get lucky , sometimes your opponent will, but on the long run, only the best players will be getting a significant edge over the others : with over 10,000 points played, I've already seen this sort of dice sequence quite a few times...
