And the argument that all other presidents have been rich so that means it's a valid criteria is even more foolish. It's not that being wealthy is bad - the problem is that unless you're amongst a tiny proportion of the population that can be classed as mega-rich you don't have a hope of becoming president. This also limits the pool to people with a certain range of values, people who don't fully endorse the idea that you should do all you can to get as rich as possible as basically excluded.

My personal view is that a healthy & sane person recognises when they have enough material possessions that gaining more isn't going to significantly improve their quality of life, and then focuses their energy on other things. I know that the ideology of US capitalism is another valid way of looking at the world and wouldn't want to suppress this. But making wealth a criteria for participation effectively stops anyone who doesn't measure success in terms of how much they have getting involved.

His wife is the Chair of Hensley & Co, one of the largest distributors of Anheuser-Busch, is it any wonder how they can afford it? Actually, this is to respond the McCain's remark that he called Obama out of touch with the "real" American people. He doesn't know what the working class go through on a day to day basis, and especially those struggling to make it by, day to day. People who bring up his homes are demonstrating that the Republican claim that only their opponents are "elites" is absurd. They guy's been a senator for over twenty years, and his father was an admiral in the Navy.
How is he not an elite?
Obama was raised by a single mother on food stamps, and he got where he is by actually working hard and having talent. Mccain rode his war hero story to the Senate, and maybe to the White House.
