I have a question about these gas piston systems.
Does the gas piston increase the felt recoil of the rifle?

No, it doesn't affect accuracy. On the m4/m16 rifles, the gas travels back the gas tube and pushes the bolt back to reload - this gas fouls up the bolt and chamber, and that can lead to jams. On a weapon intended to be used on full auto, it would be very bad. So instead on this weapon the gas pushes on a piston running through the tube, which in turn pushes the bolt back.

I never noticed ... ( 2 months ago by Tankmaster46)
I never noticed this:
On semi auto, there's this white/silver metal thing closes after each shot.
On Full auto, it stays open after each bullet. It even closes when switching to semi auto. that's something i didn't know about the AR-15 rifle family.
Interesting.

its called open bolt operation. it allows for higher rat of fire due to better heat dissipation.

ooo rllly? Have you watched the future weapons episode and done some reading on the LWRC IAR? I don't think so. They gave it a single shot mode for a reason and that is so that every soldier can use it for whatever duties.
Yes. The recoil ... ( 2 months ago by VolDep45)
Yes. The recoil impulse is a bit stronger although it is straight back and does not increase muzzle rise at all. FWIW, I bought a 10.5-inch upper last February through which I have shot almost 6,000 rounds.
It's a requirement ... ( 2 months ago by VolDep45)
It's a requirement that is dictated by the USMC RFP. They want the flexibility to be able to provide accurate rifle fire with the same weapon that canbe used for immediate suppression.

no, it fires from closed bolt on semi auto
exclusive to this gun
i dont like that ... ( 1 month ago by Apolloisbest)
i dont like that the bolt stays open when the gun is in full auto...even though the dirty gas from the round is released from atop the barrel, with an open bolt you could get all kinds of things inside of it its just IMO

Awesome innovation ... ( 3 weeks ago by halorocka888)
Awesome innovation in a timeless weapon. However, it just seems too much like the M4 to be worth it. The only way I see the IAR being worth it, if EVERY Squad Gunner was using larger magazines.

A very nice awesome looking AR but why open bolt on full auto???? it can get filled with sand & dust, but i guess there is some explanaition for that cos i don't think they made it that way for the weapon to get more jammed. Can someone help me out here?
The mil spec is ... ( 1 week ago by phillipgohorns)
The mil spec is open bolt on full auto for the light machine gun role - for cooling. This gun was designed to replace the FN SAW which fires with an open bolt. Note that it is closed bolt on semi which is required for first shot accuracy.

the open bolt ... ( 1 week ago by holskey)
the open bolt design is to help with cook offs. with an open bolt there is no round sitting in the chamber to cook off. not to mention it helps cool the chamber between firing.
they better have ... ( 1 week ago by holskey)
they better have something to hold more than 30rds. the saw can hold 100 to 200rds so this should be able to as well right guys???
that is f-ing ... ( 1 week ago by holskey)
that is f-ing awesome ive never seen those before, if the mags can hold up under combat stress then the weapon would be almost prefect.
