The Confederate Congress was fighting to keep slavery which was not against the law. Enlisted Confederates were not fighting and dying so rich slave owners could keep their slaves.
The Union won the war, so we have always read their side of it. Many free and non-free slaves fought in the ranks with Confederate soldiers.

Meaning the States have the option to ban slavery if they wanted too.
Yes it was about slavery but also the States right issue.
