He was talking about how the water flowed into the mine and dissolved the rocks in there. Increase in salinity IS the increase in salt content...the Gulf of Mexico was talked about later.

Dude if you listen to the commentator at 4:17 into the video, he says the canal from the Gulf of Mexico flowed for 2 days and filled the lake. Knowing that the Gulf of Mexico contains salt water (ocean), and the lake now contains water from the ocean, leads me to believe this is why the wateris salty.

oh now i get it, sry i didn't really hear him say dat part,
ok thanks for pointing that out.
that was pretty crazy having all that water drain down into the mine.
but do u know how they stoped the water in the canal from going into the hole to?
or did they full the hold back???

The water eventually stopped flowing from the Gulf of Mexico, because the mine had fill with water. The water equalized.

Had it not been a salt mine (where water couldn't dissolve the mine), it wouldn't have been this spectacular.
The part about the 400foot gyser of water that shot out of the mine shaft...it's just too funny in a really messed up way...thinking about all the dead fish:(

it might been the salt that maide it salty anyways because when fresh water flows into oceans it does not mix right away but stays on top. so it might be still the salt but i doubt it.

It is dumb, but ... ( 1 month ago by Frenzyk1lla)
It is dumb, but only because the people who were drilling ought to have checked if there were hazards beneath; clearly that didn't happen here. After all, the diameter of the drill bit was only 14", the odds of drilling into a mine are pretty astronomical.
This is an ecological disaster; these seem pretty common these days, like the Great Pacific Landfill for example.
I believe this was ... ( 1 month ago by TruthSurge)
I believe this was dumbness squared.
1) Drilling over a mine or cave-like structure W/O knowing it (should have used sonar or something to test first
2) Drilling in a lake OVER said cave-like structure
It's like all these radioactive storage bins underground. Sweet. when one breaks... don't cry over the two-headed kids being born. :)
A disaster of even ... ( 2 weeks ago by glazinq)
A disaster of even greater magnitude is happening right now in East Java, Indonesia. Again because of drilling. Dumb fucks drilled into a mountain (volcano) releasing a bazzilion tons of hot mud which has been swallowing the surrounding countryside for 3 years now and shows no sign of stopping.
