I have listened to this piece hundreds of times over the years and even slowed it down; if Alla Rakha ever missed a beat echoing what Ravi Shankar played, I'll be damned if I can find it. Everyone should listen to his explanation (Ravi's) on how this sort of music is made up. I found it to be quite informative.
I remember ... ( 4 months ago by hemming57)
I remember interviews of Ravi Shankar years ago saying that what he tried to convey to his young listeners that what he played was classical Indian music and not some type "pop music."

I believe you just mixed up Native American "indians" with someone from the subcontinent of India. So you're not in a real position to educate the rest of us, if you're ignorant to such a basic thing.

He was attempting to convey the alleged ignorance of Indian culture on behalf of hippies by mentioning items associated with Native Americans.

Hippies don't exist, the word Hippie is just an illusion created by the media to generalize a group of people who followed certain ideals during the 1960's, who didn't like to be labeled.

It is the second part of a piece called DHUN (Dadra and fast Teental), it was played 19 minutes long in Monterey. It is in a rhytm cycle of sixteen beats, and is an adaption by Ravi Shankar fron the raga known as Pancham-Se-Ghara. All of that performance is featured on cd with a very good audio quality from Angel Label. cheers.
