Why would the aliens need to communicate with music? They've had the crews of flight 19 on board for the last fifty years. They'd be speaking English as well as us.

But no one had aged due to relativistic effects, so they didn't have fifty years to learn. To the aliens only a short time had passed.

Nevertheless it shows that the aliens had contact with earth 50 years prior to finally saying hello. Being super intelligent, wouldn't they rather have a proper conversation, as opposed to farting about with an electric organ? I maintain that they would have taken the trouble to learn an earth language. And don't get me started on how inconsiderate the aliens would have to be to abduct people, and then drop them home after their family members have all died. Semi quavers my arse.

I loved this film when I was a child, (I saw it in the theater). But I'm an adult now. DanGlynwillie makes valid points.
I would maintain ... ( 2 weeks ago by Jourell1)
I would maintain that they'd wish to create a form of communication that could act as a midpoint, a common language rather than using a established language that could cause problems due to a mistranslation on either side. They may be extremely intelligent but they are also not human. by teaching us a language based on mathematics, which music is, they help minimize this. though we probably use different notation, math concepts and constants are much more universal.
As to being ... ( 2 weeks ago by Jourell1)
As to being inconsiderate, who says they have the same concepts of consideration? If they wanted to understand us, what better way than to study our people but they would be outsiders and the effect it would have on the individuals might not occur to them

Mmm. Given a choice, and the whole lot decided that decided their families wouldn't miss them, so they might as well stay on the ship for fifty years. I think not.

Basically the premise of this movie is that an alien race, advanced beyond our comprehension, crosses countless billions of miles of deep space to bring wisdom to earth, and upon arrival, tries to communicate by tootling on a trombone. Highly feasible.

Electronically. Their computers and our computers could swap more data in a few minutes than an alien with a trombone could manage in several lifetimes. As to the language, anyone who could cross space at hundreds of times the speed of light would find mastering any of our languages or methods of transmission childs play, especially as we've been broadcasting into space for decades.
