Hey ukp571,You don't really think the people of the south really cared about politics do you?It was strickly a war for the agressive, money and power hungry Vietnamese politicians and the huge investments in plantations (Rubber) owned by us and the French. The people didn't care nor would they have known what kind of government was at power.Aside from those that favored the U.S. envolvement and the soldiers,no one else suffered during or after the takeover by the north. Also, we were there in '58.
The north was ... ( 1 month ago by coleyman1)
The north was actually on the outskirts of Siagon the same hour as the last choppers were leaving the Imperial Palace. As a matter of fact, the last chopper out was being fired on by NVA regulars, not cong! Also, the tunnels weren't dug with sticks! and they certainly weren't "bomb-proof". Most of the tunnel systems had been there for years--decades even! Very complex and detailed, but I really don't think you have any idea what a 500 or 1000 lb bomb can do! You really are showing your age!!

coleyman1, with all due respect ukp571 and I were arguing for weeks and the comments should be understood in context. We disagree on the following points: upk571 believes that the U.S. did not lose the Vietnam war, and that if we continued a bombing-only (no boots on the ground) in the last years of the war, we would have expelled the communists from Vietnam.
I believe that we lost in Vietnam and that the war, by 1968, was unwinnable militarily.

To support my argument, I explained that the Vietnamese people had driven out the Chinese, French, and Japanese occupiers long before the U.S. ever came. I am very much well aware that the tunnel systems were intact long before (they were crucial in the aforementioned struggles.) When I say "with sticks," that is obviously figurative speech. The idea being conveyed is that they constructed tunnels with no major capitol or equipment, but with sweat, blood, and tears. It's not meant literally.

Look jolly113, the Chinese were the north's chief supplier throughout the entire war. As a matter of fact, most of the NVA regulars wore Chinese uniforms. I have one in my attic! The U.S. engagement, acording to published reports, in Vietnam was to stop the spread of communism from filtering into Laos, Cambodia, Thiland, and to protect ours and our allys investments in the south. Also there were promises and trade agreements that would have made several diplomats in the south very wealthy.

Moreover, yes, bombs were dropped with the intent of clearing foliage and destroying tunnels. It appears that you, like ukp571, believe that they were genuinely effective in this role.
If you ever visit Vietnam, many of these tunnel networks today are open tourists as a historical/national monuments, complete with museum exhibits and manikins. Operation Rolling Thunder, which spanned nearly four years and involved more than three times the

As to your comment that the Vietcong were not present during the Fall of Saigon, it was a Vietcong guerilla who raised the Vietcong flag over the Presidential Palace on April 30th (my mother lived in Saigon). It was also the Vietcong that the South surrendered to.
I warmly encourage you to brush up on history.

What does your last comment have anything to do with what we were talking about? What is your point about the Chinese suppliers? What does that have to do with the fact that the Vietnamese were a resilient people who drove out the Chinese and others long ago?
And yes, I am well aware of our misguided foreign policy at the time trying to prevent the spread of communism. It was called the domino theory. What does that have to do with what we were talking about?

Did I even mention anything about trade agreements? I believe you are arguing with ukp571 about that topic.
Did you mix up who you are even arguing with, and what about? Why don't you sit down for a while and regroup, because I am trying to have a rational discourse here.

jolly113, you must be reading from some book or something. You surely haven't been talking to someone that was there! You also must have no knowledge of the military of the 60's and 70's. You seem to be just quoting from some text that a high school kid would read in 9th grade history. Why don't you just put the book down and find a Marine or Army Vet and ask him about the war. Stop popping off about something you don't understand..and kid, just don't tell that vet that you think we lost that war!
It is important for ... ( 1 month ago by jolly113)
It is important for Americans to understand the war and draw out lessons. The point of this is not political statement, but to account for each and every one of the over 58,500 Americans who died in Vietnam. It is to ensure that a new generation of twenty year olds is not sent to the slaughter in a land halfway around the world, fighting for an entirely foreign people, for morally ambiguous reasons, all while a public at home lives the comfort of daily life forgetting their suffering.
The only lesson to ... ( 1 month ago by coleyman1)
The only lesson to be learned from this is to not start a war that you commit to.We can take out any country in the world if it is necessary. We just can't seem to get the country committed for very long when the killing starts. You could have given every citizen in the U.S. a gun on 09/12/01 and they would have been ready to do whatever it took to "reply" to what happened the day before.A year down the road it was business as usual, leave me alone, give me this, don't interupt my vacation, etc...

Apart from approximately 1 million ex soldiers & US sympathisers who were imprisoned in re-education camps without formal charges or trial & the 165,000 who died in these camps & the 1.3 million that fled vietnam, everybody else was fine? Apart from the fact it harasses & jails dissidents, controls all media, sharply restricts religious freedom, & prevents anyone from setting up Independant political, labor,or religious groups. They're still suffering today "TOTALITARIANISM"

I come from a 'socialist' country at the time of this war. Funny how people in Poland remember that communists started both the Vietnam and Korean wars, but many Americans forgot that. We were rooting for you, guys. And, eventually, with help from Reagan, we broke the neck of global communism through the Solidarity movement. We haven't forgotten your sacrifice. You did what had to be done in Vietnam. We respect and mourn your sacrifice. Thank you, guys.
